  1. Take 1/2 cup toor/Arhar Dal

Steps to make Tricolour Sambhar Vada:
  1. Firstly, pressure cook toor dal, 1 tomato, ¼ tsp turmeric and 1½ cup water for 5 whistle.
  2. In a kadai heat 3 tsp oil and saute mustard, pinch of hing, 1 dried red chilli and few curry leaves now add 1/4 cup tamarind extract and salt mix well boil for 10 minutes or till tamarind extract gets cooked well.Add cooked dal mix well also add water and adjust consistency boil well add 1 tbsp of sambar powder and stir well and boil for 2 minutes finally sambar is ready.
  3. Soak Urad dal in a bowl of water overnight.Grind this in a blender the next day to make a paste.Add green chillies, ginger, salt and curry leaves. Mix well.Take a good portion in your hands and flatten it, make a hole in the center.Heat oil in a deep frying pan, fry the vadas till golden brown.Remove and place them over paper towels to drain excess oil.
  4. Serve hot vada with sambar and coconut chutney.
